“A NATION OF HEATHENS.”
Bishop Wallis Explains.
Wellington, Dec. 5
Bishop Wallis, in the course of a letter to the Post with reference to his cabled remarks at the Melbourne Church Congress says - ‘ ‘ The subject we were discussing was the obstacles to religion in Australia. In the course of discussion I stated that the most formidable obstacles in my own colony were the growing scarcity of religious instruction in our homes and the total absence of religious instruction from the curriculum of our State schools, and that in consequence, a large part of our population was becoming heathen. The Bishop adds that he believes this statement to be perfectly true, and had made it again and again in New Zealand. He had no thought of comparing this colony with Australia, nor was he speaking unjustly dr ungenerously of a land which had ,been his -home for nearly twelve years, and had become very dear to him.
