TELEPHONE IMPROVEMENTS
We clip the following from Saturday’s issue of the Yielding Star We notice that in the Wairarapa district the Telegraph Department is altering the syistem by the introduction of the “metallic circuit" instead of the obsolete method of ‘ ‘ earthing ’ ’ the wire for the return current. The necessity for something being done in this district in the same direction is particularly manifest, for at certain times of the day it is almost impossible to com- 5 ' 1 ' municate with outside bureaux for the noise caused by telegraph instruments and other wires connected with the system. An instance of this was very noticeable the other day when our representative was at Sandon. Whilecommunicating with the office here, an employee of the Railway Department at. Foxton, with ton much spare timejon his hands, wag: '•* continually “ breaking in ” • remarks intended to be funny, whistling popular airs, and generally making a nuisance of himself, We are informed that the same gentleman is an adept at this game, and if that be so perhaps the De- . partment might relieve the situ* ation by a little judicious* promotion.
