A WORD TO THE WISE.
A false report is being circulated in a certain quarter to the effect that this journal is being run by and on behalf of the Prohibition
Party. This is a malicious falsehood and uttered with a view to boycott us in business. We are not to be bought either by publican or prohibitionist. It is true we are opposed to the open bar because of the misery and degradation it inflicts on our fellow men and women and we desire to uplift rather than trample on our fellows. We have no quarrel with publicans, who are plying a legalised calling, but if we find that the law is being broken we shall hit from the shoulder every time. We desire to live at peace with all men and so long as the law is maintained the local licensees, whom we believe to be very estimable citizens, have nothing to fear from us, nor do we bear them any ill-will. Further we abhor and despise the crawlsome creature who has convictions on this great reform question but who prostitutes his manhood for the sake of a few shillings worth of trade, and fawns to the publican and then stabs him behind his back. The publican, as well as the no-license advocate, loves fair play and so far as we are concerned he will get it.
