FOXTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A meeting of the council of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, held on Thursday, was attended by Messrs P. J. Heunessy, president (in the chair), F. W. Frankland, G.W. Morgan, M. Perreauandß. Moore. Correspondence as follows was read and received : From the Postmaster in relation to the erection of receiving boxes in Burke-street and Union-street, and the despatch of mails to Westport and Greyraouth direct by sea.

From the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce in reference to proposed conference at Palmerston on matters affecting the interests ot both places, and the purchase of the WellingtonManawatu railway by the Government, and suggested two lines to the railway, and from Mr John Stevens, in reference to wharf extension and increased railway facilities at the wharf. From the Traffic Manager, Wanganui, in reference to railage accommodation at Foxton.

From the Foxton Borough Council permitting the use of the Library room for meetings alter 8 p.m. Mr Morgan intimated that the Railway Traffic Manager at Wanganui had mentioned to him that the extra railway facilities would be provided at the Foxton wharf when necessary. ■ Some discussion took place as to the present pos.tion in regard to the Government taking over the Manawatu Railway, and Mr Frankland explained the position in regard to the proposed conference at Palmerston North according to the information he ha 1 received from the president of the Palmerston North Chamber.-

The question bf the formation of a Harbour Board for the Foxlon district was discussed. It was resolved “That Mr Morgan be appointed by the Council to look into the question of formation of Harbour Board and establishment of Custom House, and as scon as possible report to the Council on the result of his investigation.” On receiving Mr Morgan’s report and recommendation the Council will again consider the matter and take such steps as may appear advisable.

On the proposal of the Preside it seconded by Mr Frankland it was resolved “That the attention of the Government be called to the fact that the sand is still drilling into the Manawatu river, and that the promise which had been made 18 months ago to the Council that a Government officer would be sent to report on the matter, had not yet been fulfilled.” The President pointed out that the constant drifting of the sand into the river was the cause of the channel constantly getting blocked and altering its course. On the proposal of Mr Perrean seconded by Mr Frankland it was resolved “ That the president (Mr Hennessy) be asked to interview the owners of the Moutoa Estate on the subject of planting flax on portions of the Estate where there is no flax at present, and to report at the next meeting of the Council.”

On the subject of water supply for fire extinguishing purposes it was resolved that Mr Hennessy obtain from the Hamilton borough particulars of the cost and nature of the Hamilton water supply. It was also resolved that the Chamber of Commerce ask the Borough Council to consider the advisability of passing a by-law requiring all owners of property to provide at least two 400 gallon tanks for each cottage. The following new members were elected: Messrs RaeHoward, T. Rimmer and John Hill.
