The Government land valuator was in P'oxton last week. He intends to make a revaluation of town properties. We understand that a poll will be taken in due course for rating on unimproved value in Foxton. This system of rating is beyond doubt the most equitable and we hope that ratepayers will see the wisdom of adopting it when it is placed before them.

We look forward with interest to ‘‘The New Idea ” in its new form.

It should be unnecessary for us :o remind the public of the bazaar to be held in the local public hall to-morrow afternoon and evening. The members of All .Saints Girls Sewing Guild have been working assiduously for months past in preparing useful articles for sale. There are also to be several side attractions including an amusing little comedy entitled “ Is Marriage a Failure.” There is no doubt that the affair will be a huge success.

Mr T. U. Cook, who was a member of the Eighth contingent in South Africa, brought back with him a number of cartridges which had been issued by the Imperial Government and which were kept in his bandolier. The other day, while at target practice, he thought he would try one of the cartridges. Finding it misfired he opened it and found that instead of containing powder the reverse end of the bullet was a pencil Case. The maker of the bullet was Knoch, Bermingham. Yet a man’s life may have depended upon that supposed bullet. As Mr Cook stated to our representative, it was no joke to play.

Mr Speus, who has been in charge of the Presbyterian Church in this district for the past eighteen months, was entertained by a number of his church adherents and friends last night prior to his departure. On behalf of those present Mr Henderson in an appropriate speech handed Mr Speirs a purse of sovereigns and wished him and Mrs Speirs and family God speed wherever they might be. Mr Speirs in acknowledging the gift, said he had conscientiously done his duty. Of course he had not pleased everybody, but even the Master they professed to serve had not been able to do so. He thanked those present on behalf of Mrs Speirs and himself for the kind remarks uttered. During the evening songs, etc, were rendered by several present and after refreshments had been partaken of a very enjoyable evening was brought to a close. Mr and Mrs Speirs are to be entertained at a ■farewell social and presentation at Tiakitahuna on Thursday night.
