Gas and Electrical Proposals.

At last night’s Borough Council meeting the following letter was read from the Manager of the Palmerston North Gas Company re lighting the borough : —I am instructed by my directors to ascertain the following : (1) What title and terms would the .Council be prepared to offer; (2) Would the Council be prepared to guarantee a return of 6 per cent per annum ou an expenditure say of ? ; (3) Can the Council give any information as to the probable number of gas consumers ? On the motion of Cr Stiles seconded by Cr Baker, it was resolved that in reply to the above the Council does not see its way to enter into any guarantee as regards interest on loan, and if the Company would state the area they are prepared to light the Council will furnish the number of houses within the area. A letter was also read from the Wellington Electric Light and Power Company Ltd, offering a second-hand plant for sale to the Council for consisting of 1 Davy-Paxman boiler of 130 h.p. ; 1 do, horizontal engine of 130 h.p ; 1 75 K.W. alternator complete. The boiler has been passed for a pressure of iqolb to the sq. inch. The machinery is running and giving every satisfaction and the alternator would supply the equivalent of about 1750 16 c.p. lamps. The above plant could be supplied by the company in duplicate for ,£950 net cash. The Company also stated that it was prepared to submit a complete scheme for lighting the township for a fee ot 20 guineas but this fee would not be charged if the scheme was accepted. Cr Baker proposed and the Mayor seconded that the Company be advised that the question of lighting the borough is being considered and a reply will be sent at a later date.—Carried.
