FOXTON ATHLETIC CLUB.
Annual Sports Meeting.
Although the Foxton Athletic Club Committee were in doubt whether to go on with the sports yesterday, it was finally decided they should eventuate, which perhaps proved wise, for as the day wore on the weather brightened and a fair attendance was recorded, though a decrease in gale receipts was registered as compared with last year. The different cycling and pedestrian events filled well, and provided interesting sport. Falls occurred in some of the bike events, but fortunately without injury to riders. Side shows did good business, while the Foxton Band rendered capital music during the day. Mr Mark Perreau and staff worked the refreshment booth effectively, while all the committee and officials worked hard to eusure success, notably F. Whibley (secretary). The Grand Handicap points trophy (Berry and Co.’s) was won by Hall, with 10 points. These points count for the Moutoa Estate Cup, for competitor first gaining 20 points. The Concert.
There was a good attendance at the Public Hall in the evening, when a concert programme was gone through. Ranelli, a professional conjurer and fire-eater, took cn, while Dan Heagerty, who impersonated a quack doctor in stump oratory displayed much talent. His impersonations of
the late Premier on the land question and Mr Fred Pirani in debate were full of- merit. Miss Lizzie Laing received a well-elrned encore for her rendition of “ Why don’t they play with me,” while the audience suitably marked their approval of Mr Geo. Fowler, who sang three catchy songs in good voice. To speak plain, the billiard cue juggling turn became rather monotonous, and the item would„have been as well off the bill-oi-fare. Mr Horn blow recited two poems with effect. The piano accompaniments were in the capable hands of Miss May Laing and Mr Middleton. During the interval, Mr E. G. Sutherland, on behalf of the Committee and donors, presented the successful competitors with the trophies won by them at the sports. More than a passing word of praise is due to Mr Sutherland who organised and carried out the concert programme.
