Lieutenant Peary is returning home from his Arctic Expedition. He‘reached 87 degrees 6 minutes north 011 July 16, beating Duke Abuzzie’s record. Lieutenant Peary wintered north of Grant Island and sledged northwards in February. When beyond the 65 degree a gale raged for six days, destroying the caches where food had been deposited for the return journey and cutting off communication with the supporting C'olumns. Peary nevertheless continued his northward progress, and having reached the 87th degree, commenced to return. During the journey back the party ate eight -dog;s-

' Lieutenant Peary sailed in July, 1905, on .his fifth voyage to northern seas. His ship, the Roosevelt, was specially built for the journey. The Duke of Abuzzi, who previously held the f< Farthest North” record, spent fifteen, months in the Arctic regions, and returned in September, 1900. He reached a point 86 degrees 33 minutes.
