MURDERS BY KANAKAS.
Death of the Rev. Mr Cobden.
Noumea, October 30,
Details of the murder of the Rev. C. Godden at the Island of Opa, in the New Hebrides Group, on 15th October, show that the kanaka who committed the crime had been imprisoned in Queensland, and swore to take revenge on the first white man he met.
Mr Godden visited the native, who shot him in one of his legs, and followed this up by attacking his victim with a tomahawk whilst Mr Godden was trying to reach his residence.
Natives next day arrested the murderer, and hahded him over to the captain of a French warship, who brought him to Noumea. A French colonist named Jego was murdered by a Solo man Islander at South Malioolo. The murderer was immediately killed by Malicolo natives.
