LOCAL & GENERAL NEWS

Heavy rains commenced to fall again at an early hour this morning. The insurances on the house and furniture owned by Mr Ewart, of Himatangi, and destroyed by fire last Thursday morning, were;— on the residence and on the furniture. The Services in the Methodist Church, to-morrow, will be con : ducted by the Rev. J. Clover of Halcombe. At the evening service the choir will render the anthem “God Reigneth.” Much sympathy is felt in the Ashurst District at the death of Mrs R. Twisleton, wife of Mr F. Twisleton, of the Bunnythorpe Road, which occurred in Palmerston on Saturday, The Foxton Brass Band will discourse the following programme to-night, weather and other circumstances favourable:—March, Clear the way; Fantasia, Ernani; Valse, Dawn of Day; Polka, Blush Rose; March, The East Shot.

Foxton is being visited by an aristocratic looking individual who “knows your brother, and thought he would just look you up, has an important billet at the end of the month; wants the loan of a crown—just a matter of a few shillings, old chap etc.” And if the person approached is fool enough to pay out he goes away laughing up his sleeve. Such parasites deserve to be sent to work.

One of the most notable events of this year was the magnificent State Schools’ Exhibition which was held in Melbourne last month. It was of interest to everybody, old and young alike. Nothing like it had ever been seen probably in all the world.. The November Review of Reviews contains an exceedingly fine article upon it and upon the “ new education, ” which ought to be read by every one of our readers, for there is scarcely any subject that is of such general interest as that of education. There are also two very illuminating articles in the section under “Character Sketches,” one on “ King Peter of Servia,” monarch of the unhappy country which has seen so many changes lately and which witnessed the tragic murder of the late King and Queen; and the other is upon “ John Oliver Hobbes ” (Mrs. Craigie). A splendid assortment of wedding invitation and fancy cards now in stock. All kinds of commercial and ' general printing and bookbinding im dertaken.

Sixty shares have already been taken up in the newly-formed StarBowkett Building Society. At the local police Court this morning before Messrs Dr Bennett and Thos. Rimmer, Esq., Js.P., Daniel Barron and James Collingwood were convicted of drunkenness and discharged. A total of 223 entries have been received for the coming Foxton Sports meeting, and such a large number of likely competitors augurs well for the success of this year’s gathering. A local duck fancier recently advertised sittings of eggs for sale. Shortly after the notice appeared in the paper the number of eggs laid by the ducks apparently fell off. At least he thought so, but the advertisement had directed the egg thief to the laying ground. He has found it more profitable to get rid of the ducks. A boy whilst collecting driftwood in Oriental Bay, near Clyde quay, Wellington, on Thursday nieht, found part of the body of a male infant, minus the head. He notified the police. The body appeared to have been in the water about two weeks. Preliminary investigations are being made by the police, with medical aid, prior to a decision being arrived at by the coroner as to holding an inquest on the remains. The formation of the StarBowkett Building Society in Foxton promises to be a flourishing institution. We shall give a full explanation of the working of the Society in our next issue. A provisional directorate of well-known local men has been appointed, and Mr Rae-Howard the interim Secretary, will be pleased to give any information to any person desiring to take up shares.

Mr E. A. Howe has had his bicycle.shop thoroughly renovated and the front made most attractive, in order to bring it into line with the cycle depots in larger centres. A cycle stand has been erected, where samples of all models of the firm (Fowler & Co.) will be on exhibition. Messrs Fowler & Co., for whom Mr Howe is local agent, handle picked models of cycles from Canada, U.S.A. and England, together with their wellknown Palmerston North built Favourite and British, Bicycles ■will be built to order. Upwards of 30 machines have been disposed of during the present month. Mr George Fowler will be associated with Mr Howe during the coming season.

Messrs Fraser and Rimmer, J’s.P. presided at the local S.M. Court, yesterday morning, when Lung Wong was further remanded on a charge of causing bodily harm to a fellow-countryman last Wednesday week, The accused has been incarcerated since that date, and Mr Fraser said the Bench refused to go on with the case unless an interpreter was procured. Constable Whitehouse said the charge was a serious one. Mr Fraser said the man had been in gaol for over a week and the police should have procured an interpreter. If the man was a Chinaman he was entitled to fair treatment and he considered the police had been lacking in their duty in not procuring the services of an interpreter. Constable Whitehouse said Segt Stackpool had, said he would send an interpreter but had failed to do so. He was remanded till to-day. At the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday morning the Chief Justice mposed the following sentences : Ernest Tiv'nr. forgery nml-ntterng, nine months ; Matthew Edward Picketing, tb ft, two years; Richard Eißs, heit, eig'fto'vi m-nths; Edwin Arnold, heft fro.u psi-aoj, two years; Edgar Michael Dell, forgery and uttering; twelve months; H. W. Allwyn, theft, a dmitted to probation.
