TERRIFIC CYCLONE.
Over a Hundred Persons Killed. New York, October 20. News from Havana states that a terrible cyclone —the worst on record—passed over Cuba yesterday. Buildings were shaken as if by earthquake. Many houses in the poorer quarters collapsed. Ninety-four natives and sixteen foreign residents were killed. The number of fatalities would have been greater but for timely warning which the people had of the approach of the storm, enabling them to gain shelter. Shipping in Havanna harbour suffered severely, no fewer than thirty-five lighters being destroyed. The American cruiser Brooklyn became stranded, but was refloated, though somewhat damaged. Extensive damage was done to crops in the province of Piuar del Rio, in West Cuba.
