SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the Foxton School Committee was held in the Library room of the Borough Council chambers last evening. Present, Messrs A. D. Clemett (chair), Rev.. Wilson, Barnard, Betty, Frankland, Austin, Gray, Coley, and the secretary (L- Wilson), 1 ■ Accounts amounting to ,£l2 6s were passed for payment. The Borough Council , wrote stating that the Committee could have the use of the Library room in which to hold their meetings.— A vote of thanks, was passed, for same. Mr Hamer’s application for use of extra room at the old schoolhouse was held over. s , It was resolved that the whole or a qqorum of the Committee be appointed?to modify the conditions of Mr Steveqs'’ essays to be written by scholars ef the local school. The Board wrote confirming the appointment of Miss G. Wanklyn as second assistant. Re the appointment of a third assistant the Board submitted the names of Misses Voycey .and Powell. The Rev. Mr Wilson proposed and Mr Barnard seconded that Miss Voycey be selected. Mr Gray moved as an amendment and the Secretary seconded, that Miss Powell be' selected. The voting being equal, the Chairman gave his casting vote in favour ot Miss Voycey, who was therefore elected to fill the position. The appointment of a headmaster gave rise to, a good deal of personal feeling among certain committeemen. .Nineteen applications were submitted by the Board,, for the position and the committee were asked to choose two out of six mentioned, There was considerable * discussion and Mr Coley proposed and- Mr Gray seconded that Mr O’Dea and Mr Mitchell be selected, v(rith a rider that the former receive special consideration. An amendment was proposed by the Secretary and seconded by Mr Barnard that the names of Messrs O’Dea: and W. Adams be submitted to the Board and that no yider be added. ' The amendment on being put was carried by six votes to three. Those who voted against it being Messrs Gray, Coley and Austin.
