A terminating building society I is shortly to be started in Foxton. A special meeting of the Manawatu Flaxmills Employees Union will be held at 8 o’clock on Monday evening. Mr Spiers, who is leaving Foxton submits in another column a list of his first class furniture for private sale. Next Friday at 7.30 p. m. Bishop Wallis will hold a confirmation t service at All Saints Church. We acknowledge receipt of official year book for 1906 from the Registrar General. We have received word that the oil engine to drive the Herald printing plant arrived by the lonic and will be installed in the course of a few days. A special meeting of the local Borough Council will be held on Monday evening- next at 7.30 o’clock for the purpose of striking a special rate for the ,£2OO loan and to further discuss the lighting question. Mr, Mrs and Miss Haywood intend spending a week at “Fairbank ’’ with Mrs Gower, prior to taking the round trip to Melbourne. Mr Haywood gives up possession of his hostelry at the end ol the month. All Saints Girls Sewing Guild intend making the forthcoming bazaar a very attractive function. Apart from other attractions a humorous piece will be staged entitled “Is Marriage a Failure?” The characters will be sustained by well-known local amateurs. In the Methodist Church the serveces will be conducted in the morning by Mr Huntley and in the evening by the Rev. J. Southern. The subject for the evening will be “Going to the Father.” The choir will sing at the evening service the anthem “I am glad” and “No more tears.” In the afternoon at 3 o’clock the Service of Song “Phil Kyle” will be repeated by the choir, Mr Hornblow will read the connective readings. A collection will be t aken in aid of the Church funds. Town Clerk Fraser, of Foxton, is one of New Zealand’s record rate collectors. For the past three years he has been able to show a sheet clear of outstanding rates. .He would command a high salary by some of the larger boroughs of the colony whose outstanding rates run into hundreds of pounds yearly. There are 19 applicants for the position of headmaster of the local state school. Mr Stewart, the headmaster resigns at the end of the present term. There are three applications for the position of third assistant rendered vacant by the resignation of Mr D. Jenks. The Committee meet on Monnay evening next to make the appointments Mr Fowler of T. C. Fowler, and Co., has received a wire to the effect that the road race which was to have left Devin and passed through Foxton on the 24th, will not take place until the 31st. Any Foxton cyclist wishing to compete may now do so by nominating forthwith. Mr and Mrs Fraser entertained Mils Haywood at their residence on Thursday evening. A large number of friends were present and a most pleasant time spent. Miss Haywood will shortly accompany her parents on an extended sea trip. A meeting of the Foxton Cricket Association was held in Mr Rough’s office on Thursday night. The following office-bearers were elected: Patron, Mr J. H. Stevens, M.H.R.; President, Mr O. Robinson ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs W. S. Stewart, W. Ross, B. Gower, F. Easton, J. A. Nash and Dr Mandl; Hon. Auditors, Messrs Chisholm and Moore; Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, W, E. Mainwaring. An elderly man named R. Cunningham, a ship’s carpenter, in the employ of Messrs Devin and Co., was seized with a stroke of paralysis while engaged at work in the hold of the s.s. Gertie on Thursday afternoon. He’ was removed to Mr Laing’s Family Hotel where, he received medical attention. For the past few weeks the unfortunate man has been in very indifferent health. He will be removed to his home in Wellington as soon as his condition fallows of his removal. Where to get your dress well made and yet at a reasonable price .j oftimes a real worry.
