FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Special Meeting. A special meeting of the Foxlon Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening for the purpose of discussing the lighting question, the details of street proposed by Messrs Easton and Austin, and the loan. B. C. Gower (Mayor) Crs Coley, Austin, Gray, Hickson Shadbolt, Frankland and Stiles. Mr H. Austin was present on behalf of Messrs Easton and Austin. The lighting question was held over till next meeting. Messrs Easton and Austin’s PROPOSED ROAD. In dealing with Messrs Easton and Austin’s proposed road to connect Whyte and Jonson streets, the Mayor said that the road in question would no doubt be a very important one to Foxton and he thought that if it were put through it should be carried out properly and everything attended to now to save future complications. Cr Stiles endorsed the Mayor’s remarks. With regard to the footpaths Cr Coley suggested that they be the same width as in Whyte-street. \ Cr Austin suggested that the culvert in proposed street be made in concrete. Cr Stiles suggested that Messrs Easton and Austin be given the alternative of cither wood or concrete kerbing. ■ Cr Frankland was of the same opinion. It was proposed by the Mayor and seconded by Ce Coley that the footpaths be the same width as in Whyte-street, kerbed with concrete 12x6 ortotara 12x3, covered with 2in of fine gravel. The road to be formed 46ft wide with a crown o 1 Sin including metal. The metal to be 12ft wide and 6ln thick and properly graded. A concrete culvert the same dimensions as that in the Avenue. Mr H. Austin here remarked that it was ridiculous to expect them to carry out conditions that even the Borough itself were not prepared to undertake, Cr Coley interposed that he did not see why it should be put on to the ratepayers. Mr Austin then asked if there was a gentleman present who could give him an estimate on a certain point concerning the expenditure on the road. Cr Coley—•“ I could, but I won’t; that’s for you to find out.” After further discussion Mr 11. Austin left the meeting with the parting remark that under the Council’s conditions the road would not be put through. Cr Gray was of opinion that the conditions imposed were rather large. j&The resolution was then put to the Council and was carried, Crs Austin and Gray voting against it. General. Tenders were received from Messrs W. J. Osboldstone, for leasing the old Borough building for 3 years at a rental of fosper week, and from J. Wyeth for 3 years lease at 12s per week. Cr Stiles thought that 3 years was too lengthy a lease, and it was finally decided that Mr J. Wyeth be offered the lease of the building for twelve months at the rental as per tender, the Council reserving a frontage to be defined by the Town Clerk. Cr Shadbolt stated that thp windmill in the Avenue had not been working properly lately and it was left in the hands of the Clerk to see to same. Proposed by Cr Stiles and seconded by Cr Frankland that a special meeting be held on Monday 2-aud inst. for the purpose of of striking a further rate for th-: loan of and to discuss other important business. The meeting then rose.
