The Manawatu County Council.

The regularly monthly meeting of the above was held at Sandon yesterday. Presenters J. G. Wilson (Chairman), Masters, McKenzie, Dalton, Hammond and Barber. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were read : From the Superintendent Electric Telegraphs, stating that the request to extend the telephone to Makowhai could not be acceded to at present. From the Foxton Borough Council, forwarding an account for £S 13s, the Council’s proportion of the expenses of the election of Licensing Committee. From the Treasury, stating that the loan of £SOO for expenditure on bridges on the FieldingAwahuri road was available. From the Palmerston North Hospital . and Charitable Aid Board, asking for payment of the levy due, £174 14s 2d. From Mr Purnell, County Clerk resigning his position and asking that it be given effect to as soon as possible after January next; also expressing his deep sense of obligation at the consideration always shown him by the Council. From C, Pigott, directing the Council’s atteniion to the state of the Shannon Ferry. From A. Mcßeth, Fielding asking permission to remove soil from Slaughterhouse road, Fielding. TREASURER’S REPORT. The Treasures’r report showed that the balances in the various accounts on 29th September wer; as follows : General account, dr ,£349 6s 4d ; Loan account, cr. ,£615 18s 2d; nett dr balance, £[2BBo 5s rod. The riding accounts showed that the amounts available for expenditure to 31st March 1907, were—Shannon, ,£6B 10s 2d ; Mount Stewart, £l2 9s gd ; Waitohi, ,£336 5s ; Rongotea, ,£ll3 ns 2d ; Carnarvon, £2OO 10s 4d ; Awahou, ,£146 qs gd ; Whirokino subdiviston, ,£97 16s 6d. Over expended—Kawakawa, ,£66 13s 3d. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The following is a summary of the Overseer’s report:— Sandon Riding—Repairs of the usual nature were carried out during the month, trimming the ruts and breaking the stones on Gust’s line, and carting metal to repair weak places in the Ohakea Terrace and Bulls-Sandon road. Mount Stewart Riding—A good deal of work has been done at number of places neas Feilding. The road machine has been used to form up a portion of the Mangaone road, and is now employed forming up Bonuses’ road. The work done by the machine is not as good as usual, owing to the team and men being strange to the work. Waitohi Riding. Stewart .and Sons have completed their contract lor delivering 500yds of metal on the TaipoAwahuri road, but it has been found advisable to bind the metal with clay to make a good job. Rongotea Riding. The usual repairs have been carried out during the month. At the corner of Joues’ and Sanson s line the 3ft culvert is breakidg up and requires to be replaced. Several sandy places on Milne’s line require binding. KawaKawa Riding. The usual repairs have been effected during the month on the Main Drain Road, Taikorea, Cooper’s and the Palmerston roads in trimming and breaking the stones. Cooksley’s contract has been completed for trimming and metalling Pike’s road in a very satisfactory manner. Awahou Riding— General repairs have been effected on Elkins, Motuihi, Foxton, Shannon, Whirokino and Kakariki roads. The pipe culvert complained of on Nelson street has been taken out and replaced. The roadman’s cottage on the FoxtonShannon road has been satisfactorily completed. Carnarvon Riding—Very little has been done in this riding beyond the trimming of the ruts on the river bank and touching up weak places on Robina and Campion’s line. The roadman’s cottage at Himatangi is in bad condition and almost unlit for habitation. The protective works at the RongoteaLongburii bridge and fence are considerably knocked about by the floods and the cattle and have been repaired. Good progress is being made with the Ohakea protective works on the Rangitikei River, and the delivery of clay on Jones’ line at 3s a yard. The Chairman reported that the iron-work of the two bridges for the Feilding - Awahuri road had been ordered, and it was proposed to start with the construction of tho bridges immediately. Mr Mcßeth’s request was granted at 6d per load. Ic was decided that the Council, under the Public Works Act, hereby declares that the provisions of clause 117 shall not apply to the road known as Sanson’s line, connecting Jones’ and Milners line, so far as the land of Henry Sanson is concerned.
