OPENING OF THE TENNIS CLUB.
The formal opening of the Foxton I,awn Tennis Club took place yesterday at 3 p.m., the weather for which was ideal. In the absence of His Worship the Mayor Mr Gower, Mr Clemett performed the opening ceremony. He congratulated the Club on the beautiful weather for an opening day and 1 predicted a successful future for the Club, which had made wonderful progress during the last two years. This was principally owing to the live secretaries the Club have been fortunate in obtaining. Mr Marshall, the late secretary, gave the club a splendid impetus last year by adding a large number members besides doing other good work, and this good example has been followed by Mr Morgan, the new secretary, who has added a further lot of 30 new members to the club’s roll, which spoke volumes for Mr Morgan as an organiser. Mr Clemett paid a very high tribute to the ladies for the good work they had done in augmenting the funds of the club, which enabled the committee to carry out so many improvements but as funds were urgently needed for further improvements Mr Clemett trgeo the members to lose no time in paying up their subscriptions. The courts were then declared formally open for play for the ensuing year. Afternoon tea was then dispensed by the ladies, and then play was indulged in for the rest of the afternoon. Mr G. T. Hall, a member of the Brougham Hill Club in Wellington, was present as a visitor and expressed himself as being very pleased with the local courts. During the past month the courts have been completely overhauled and are in splendid playing condition. A lot of the trees have been cut down and this will greatly improve the light on the courts.
