LOCAL & GENERAL NEWS.

Mr Joseph Kells, a very old resident of Palmerston, died suddenly on Thursday night. A special meeting of the Manawatu Flax-mills Employees Union will be held in the Temperance Hall on Monday evening next. Holiday railway excursions are advertised elsewhere in this issue in reference to the forthcoming Hawke’s Bay Show. At the local Masonic meeting last night Bro. Hern blow was appointed secretary vice Wor. Bro. Haywood, resigned. Two auction sales are being held in Foxton to-day, one in the Masonic Hall and the other in Manchester House. Outside firms are conducting the sales. Mr Woodroffe, butcher, has opened a shop in Manchester House, where customers can rely on getting all the primest joints. The death occurred at Rawene, in the Auckland district, on Tuesday, cf Mr Anders Fredsburg, who some years ago kept an hotel at Bunnythorpe, Although we have experienced very hot weather during the past week there have been some sharp frosts in the early mornings and as a consequence young fruit has suffered. Very little interest was taken by ratepayers in the loan proposals yesterday. Voters straggled into the polling booth every now and then, but no one would have suspected that anything unusual was happening. Messrs Smale and Hay have decided to close their Foxton Drapery establishment and will commence a clearing sale on Tuesday next. We publish an inset in this issue and we direct attention to their advertisement. The services at the Methodist Church to-morrow will be conducted by the Rev J. Southern. The subject for the evening will be “ The Farmer and his ground— The wayside seed.” The choir will render an anthem at this service. We , understand Mr Norman Campbell of Waikanae has sold his sawmill and property to Mr W. M. Vickers of Wanganui.' Possession will be taken almost immediately. We wish Mr Vickers every success in his new venture. The Rev Mr Duncan, of Foxton, New Zealand’s veteran Presbyterian minister, although now in his ninety-third year, excepting for the loss of his eye-sight, enjoys good health. He delights to converse with old friends and at times bubbles over with humorous Scotch anecdotes. The Debating contest Foxton v. Rongotea will take place in the local Masonic Hall on Monday evening. The subject of debate will be: “Is the power of Great Britain on the wane ?” The visitors will champion the affirmative and the local Society the negative. An interesting and instructive time should be spent. The public will be admitted. A small charge of admission will be made. A respectible workhig man requires board and lodging.

Mr Rae-Howard advertises % a.re section in Jenks St. for sale. Messrs Sutherland and Rough have a good second-hand piano advertised tor sale cheap. Mr Rae-Howard makes further additions to his property list in this issue. The local tennis court is being put in order for the forthcoming season. Mr Billens, of Palmerston North will conduct services in the local Presbyterian Church to-morrow. Messrs Sutherland and Rough have a nice window display in the premises recently occupied by Mr Thompson, Main Street. The Education Board’s request that Miss Small be stationed at the local, school, was acceded to by the School Committee at their last meeting.

The S. S. Himatangi and Queen of the South sailed this morning. The Baden Powell and Gertie are at present berthed at the wharf. A congregational meeting of the Foxton Presbyterian Church will be held on Tuesday, October 16th at 7.30 o'clock, for the purpose of electing a committee of management and general business. The Rev. I. Jolly will preach and preside.
