CONFLAGRATION ON THE RIVER.
Punt load of Fibre Destroyed Quite a flutter of excitement was caused yesterday shortly before noon by the screeching whistle of one of Messrs Levin and Co.’s tug boats. It was soon apparent that something unusual was happening. Investigation attire river side disclosed the fact that a cargo of fibre on a punt and being towed by Messrs Levin and Co, ’s Dido, was ablaze*. The tug boat was in charge of Messrs Schultze and Turner who with much difficulty ran the burning cargo from mid-stream to a little inlet at the end of the wharf. Willing hands were soon at work to stifle the flames, but the whole cargo consisting 55 bales of hemp and 16 of tow belonging to Messrs O’Connor and Lind and Mr Symons was practically ruined by fire and water. The fibre was in transit ‘from the mills to the s.s. Queen of the South, It is supposed that a spark from the funnel of the tuc alighted on one of-the bales, which were uncovered, and caused the conflagration. We understand that an offer of has been made for the salvage.'
