TOWN HALL AND OTHER MATTERS.

Sir, —Some time ago you referred a letter I wrote in regard to the local public hall to the Borough Council to deal with. Since then I have spoken to several people and they . are of the same opinion as myself viz, that the hall in its present condition is a disgrace to the town. I*et any borough councillor look through the building and its appointments and see for himselt if what I say is not correct. Is it likely that the town clerk, who is agent for the hall, and inspector of buildings likely to raise his voice in the matter. No sir, I don’t think so and I am of opinion that the press is the proper place to publicly Ventilate, these matters, and I hope you will insert this letter. The Municipal Corporations Act states that any person using a public building without having a license, which must be issued annually by the Council, shall be liable to a penalty of not more than £2O for every v such offence. Will the building <• inspector tell me whether such license has been issued. The Act also provides that the building shall be provided with sufficient means of ventilation and of ingress and egress, provision aeainst fire and that a sufficient supply of water is laid op, etc. I understand companies who engage the hall are asked to “part up” quick enough, and I take it sir, that the agent of this building should act as quickly in seeing that the provisions of the Act are carried out. While I am on the subject of buildings sir, may I transgress a little farther and ask this precious building inspector whether he is aware of the fact that there are quite a number of buildings in the borough quite unfit for human habitation and which should be condemned by the Council. Why, I ask, sir, has the building inspector not reported on this very important matter to the Council ? I hope, sir, you will deal with these matters yourself as I can assure you they require exposure.— Yours aga : n sir, I • One of the Pit,
