High Commissioner’s Report.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, September 15th :

There has been more inclination to purchase mutton during the past week. The stocks on hand are heavy but the market is firm in anticipation of smaller supplies arriving. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 3 5-Bd, and North Island at 3 3-8 d per lb.

The lamb market is firm with a hardening tendency, as stocks are being reduced. Light-weight Canterbury is extremely scarce at qfd per lb. The average price of other than Canterbury brands is 4 3*Bd.

The stocks of New Zealand beef on hand are light, and there is a much better demand. Hind-quar-ters are quoted at 3 5-8 d and forequarters at a£d per lb. The butter market is firm, and there is a large demand for better grades. 2442 boxes of New Zealand butter arrived during August. Choice New Zealand makes are quoted 115 s, Danish at 1235, and Canadian at 114 s per cwt. The cheese : market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. There is a good deal of cheese now arriving being held in store. The Canadian makes are quoted at 61s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet, with business doing. A good feeling, however, prevails. Prices are unchanged since last week.

The cocksfoot seed market is quiet. Bright seed is scarce and i/lb clean-dressed lots are worth 45s per cwt. The wool market is firm' for immediate delivery, but weaker for future deliveries.

The current prices for Bradford tops are as follows : —36’s low crossbreds, is q|d per lb ; 40’s low crossbreds, is s|d ; 44’s medium crossbreds, is 6|d ; 50’s halfbreds, is io|d ; 56’s, quarterbreds, 2s ; 6o’s, merinos, 2s 2|d.
