THE LIGHTING QUESTION.
Mr S. Blackley, C.E., A.1.E.E., representing Messrs Turnbull and Jones, electrical engineers, met the Borough Council at a special meeting in the Borough Council Chambers last evening and submitted proposals on behalf of his firm for lighting the borough with electricity. Our representative, however, subsequently interviewed Mr Blackley, and he stated that his firm was prepared to instal electric light for the Borough of Foxtonat a cost of 10 per cent on the actual expenditure. All material, etc., would be supplied to the Borough at cost price. He said electricity would be cheaper than coal gas and the whole scheme could be carried out at a total cost of between £3OOO and Another point he said that should not be lost sight of was that the plant could be used for the dual purpose of storing electricity, and pumping for a Borough water Supply. He mentioned that persons who had installed actylene gas, would not change in favour of coal gas, but were prepared to take electricity. Mr Blackley is proceeding to Auckland to open a branch there, who by the way have been appointed New Zealand agents for the British Westinghouse Company.
