Tennis.

[By N.8.0.K.] I see the suggestion thrown out in my last notes re affiliation with the Provincial Eawn Tennis Association has born fruit, as I hear on good authority the Foxton Tennis Club have decided to affiliate. This will be of considerable benefit to tenuis players, seeing they will be eligible to play in any part of the colony. Although it is now within 10 days of the opening of the season nothing has yet been done to the courts. No doubt the committee are keeping the matter steadily in view. In the recent Queensland championships, H. A. Parker (the N.Z. champion) carried everything before him. He beat Doust (N.S.W.) in the final, 6—3, 6—2, 6—l. Parker is said to have served splendidly, and placed with perfect precision. On medium high balls he drove with a flip, which caused the ball to drop inside the base line though flying at a great pace. He ran Doust off his legs with his splendid shots, both forehand and backhand. His drop shots on the side lines won him points time and again. Miss May Sutton, the American champion, won the Welsh championship from Miss Garfit in the final by 6 —l, 6 —o. Miss Sutton is still in her teens. One reason which accounts for Miss Sutton’s success at lawn tennis is said to be that she is always willing to carry out any hints or instructions from others who have had the experience. Another is that she tries to take every ball no matter how hard or impossible it may seem. - One noticeable fact about New Zealand players of both sexes is that very few make any attempt to cultivate more than one style of service.

The annual meeting of the Wellington Provincial Eawn Tennis Association takes place in Wellington on 29th September, when the Foxton Club will no doubt be admitted to membership.
