The Manawatu Railway.
A few weeks ago Mr Field asked the Government if it was sure of its legal position with regard to the acquisition of the Manawatu railway after expire. \ tion ot the twenty-one years. reply was that the Government was quite satisfied as to its legal and as further legislation was n necessary to establish the Crown's light, there was no intention of introducing it. Mr Field then asked the Government whether there was any occasion - for secrecy in the matter, and whether the Government would apprise the House of its decision, it any, respecting the purchase, and whether there was any ground for the report that negotiations were then in progress. Sir Joseph Ward’s reply was : “ There is no foundation for any rumour that the Government is negotiating for the purchase of this railway, nor is it contemplated at present." The Government is now considering the question of admitting the company’s employees to the benefits of the superannuation fund.
