Accidents and Fatalities.
TiMARtf, Sept. 9. A distressing fatal motor car accident occurred on Saturday ifternoon. Mr and Mrs John Meikle were returning home from town in a car, Mrs Meikle, an experienced driver, being in charge. When descending a steep narrow road on the side of a cutting near the house, the car went over the bank and capsized over a wire fence. Mr Meikle was thrown out and had his right thigh broken. Mrs Meikle was pinned under the car and suffocated by the weight of it on her chest. Some time elapsed before Mr Meikle was ablejm crawl within hearing of a servant at the house. The deceased, who was about thirty-eight years of age, leaves one child, a girl of four years. Mr Meikle was well knownjas a driver for Cobb and Co. in the early days, and subsequently as proprietor ol the Grosvenor Hotel for many years. Auckland, Sept. 8. A serious accident occurred on the Herne Bay tram line last night. A motorraan named John Whitehouse, while looking round, received a severe blow on the back of the head by coming in contact with a side pole. He was rendered unconscious for an hour. The car overshot the terminus by two carlengths, and Whitehouse narrowly escaped death as his head and body hung loosely over the side of the car while passing two more poles. Dunkdin, Sept. 8. Malcolm Mcßae, an old-age pensioner, was found on the railway line near Carisbrook this morning. His skull was fractured ind both legs were broken. Deceased was an inmate of the benevolent institution. He must have been struck by a passing train during the night.
