’VARSITY BOAT RACE. CAMBRIDGE DEFEATS HARVARD. London, Sept. 9. The inter-university boat race was rowed yesterday. Cambridge won by two lengths. The race attracted a record attendance, including thousands of Americans, and enthusiasm was intense. Betting was 6 to 4on Cambridge. Cambridge won the toss and chose the Surrey si le of the river. The boats got away at 4.29 p.m. The Cambridge crew were the smarter at the start, and were soon leading by a length, which had been increased to two and a quarter yjßhmgtbs when passing Crabtree The Harvard crew, putnng on a spurt, shot under Hammersmith bridge a length and a quarter in the wake of Cambridge, but their effort was valueless, and though the Harvard representatives rowed a dogged, stern chase, Cambridge continued to improve their position, leading by three lengths at Barnes, and eventually winning by two lengths in iqmin iSsec. DURNAN TO MEET TOWNS. Sydney, Sept. 8. It has been arranged that Durnan, the Canadian oarsman, is to meet Towns, the present champion, on'the Parramatta river about the middle of March, in a contest for the championship of the world. Durnan sails for Sydney on October Ist. Towns allows his opponent for expenses.
