THE FOOTBALL ROUGH.

We congratulate the Foxton Rugby Sub-Union in its efforts to stamp out unsportsmanlike conduct and blackguardism on the football field. This national pastime requires to be carefully guarded if it is to be patronised by the public and indulged in by our youth. The game should be played in a friendly and sportsmanlike spirit and participants who do not possess sufficient willpower to hold their tempers in check should keep off the ground. The referee should be protected from insulting references from players and spectators, and if one or two examples are made of offenders it should have the desired effect. The Union should also endeavour to select as referees men who have a thorough understanding of the rules of the game and who have the confidence of the clubs.
