Australian Butter.

WEDDED & CO’S REPORT. London, August 18. Wedclel and Co’s annual review of the produce trade says it is difficult to find that there has been little real advance in the quality of Victorian and other Australian butters. Government grading may cause improvement, but hitherto the grading has not been well done. I'he review says there will be no satisfactory result till grading is made compulsory. Weddel and Co. consider that •the outlook for the coming season is very favourable, and last year's prices are likely to be exceeded.

Correspondence[We do not, bold ourselves responsible for opinio-.8 expressed b.y our correspoa d n'.p.] THE RIGHTING QUESTION. [TO THE EDITOR] .Sir, —I am very pleased to know that the Borough Council lias at last taken a firm hold of the lighting question, and that the ratepayers will be given an opportunity to say whether they will have the gas.or not. As you say sir, we are beginning to wake up, and I think it’s about time. I don’t know whether your readers are aware of the fact, but a certain gas company has been angling after the right to establish a branch works here. I hope the Council, sir, will never allow any company to draw dividends out of gas works in Eoxton. The Council should control the gas works, and, if we don’t possess officials capable of supervising such a scheme, then we should import better brains who can. It’s an undertaking that requires careful attention, but there are managers enough and to spare in the colony possessing the necessary qualifications who could be trusted to safeguard the ratepayers interests. I congratulate our Councillors upon their backbone and am sure the proposal will be carried by the people. Thanking you in anticipation and hoping other abler pens will discuss the question before the public meeting is called. —I am, etc., Anti-monopoly.
