The High Commissioner cabled yesterday : —Hemp market quiet ; small business doing at about last quotations. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commr-sioncr, dated London, August 18th The trade for all classes ot mutton has been very slow and the last cabled prices have been hardly maintained except for light weight carcases. The lamb consumption is large, but the market is a shade weaker. The average price for Canterbury brands is 4 5-Bd, and other than Canterbury, is selling at 4 l-2d to 4 5-8 d per lb. There is a better demand for beef and the market is consequently firm. The supplies of American chilled beef on hand are small. New Zealand hindquarters are selling at 8 3-8 d and forequarters at 2 T4d per lb. The butter market has advanced. Choice New ifealand is in demand at 110 sto 112 s per cwt. The quotation for Danish is 118 s to 120 s per cwt. The cheese, market is firm, Canadian makes fetching 60s per cwt. The hemp market is quiet and there is a small busines doing at about last quotations. Buyers are not keen (0 do busines in cocksfoot seed There is no change in the nominal quotation cabled last week. • The wool market is steady. The quotations for current Bradford tops are as follows:—36’s low crossbreds, 17d per lb ; 40’s low crossbreds, 17 l-2d per lb ; 44’s medium crossbreds, 18 l-2d per lb ; 50’s half breds, 22d per lb; 56’s quarter breds, 24d per lb ; 60's Merinos, 27d per lb. The gum market is quiet but firm at last quotations. There have been no auctions held during this month,
