SATURDAY’S INTERPROVINCIAL MATCHES.
At Wellington, Wellington defeated Canterbury by the phenomenal score of 34 points to nil; at Dunedin, Southland downed Otago by 12 points to 3 ; at Auckland, Auckland defeated Taranaki by 18 points to 5. The junior rep. match, Wellington v. Horowhenua. was played at Otaki on Saturday, when the former were victorious by 30 points to nil. AWAHOU v. SANDON. The Awahou-Sandon game on Saturday last was played in a very friendly spirit. Neither team had its full strength and in the ranks of Awahou especially were many juniors. Both teams scored a try, but Awahou alone converted, and thus they won the game by 5 to 3. It was mainly a forward struggle, the locals shining in the loose, especially Shadbolt and Wright, while Joe, Lambert, Osboldstone and Duffy are worthy of mention. Sandon did not seem to care much, though Carroll, Scott, Tiny McNae and Richardson were amongst those who worked hard enough to perspire freely. Mr Croucher held the whistle, and made the contest fast and interesting. Albions journey to Sandon tomorrow and play Sandon, when Rev. Father Molloy holds the whistle. An interesting contest takes place next Saturday between Huia and Awahou for the Watchorn, Stiles and Co. Cup. Footballers should keep in hard train for the sports, as some trophies worth winning are offered. , j; Albion team for Sandon tomorrow ;—Overend, Walker (2), Edwards, Read, Whibley, Furrie, Rimmer, Cummerfield, Broad, Cook, Howan, Evans, Cummerfield, Klein. Emergencies, Flint, Webb, Shadbolt. Tram leaves here at 1.15. Awahou team against Huia to-morrow : —Brown, Bogue, Jillett, Grammar, Andreson, Young, McKay, Bales, Riggs, Wilson, Spelman, G. Coley, Duffy, Briton, Osboldstone. Emergencies, Holihan, Cunningham, Middleton. FOXTON SUB-UNION, A meeting of the F'oxton SubUnion was held at Gray’s Post Office Hotel on Saturday evening last, there being present —Messrs H. Austin (chairman), A. Davis, J. Thompson, R. Newth, A. .Shadbolt, J. Williams, J. Jillett, and E. G. Sutherland (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. GENERAL ITEMS. The secretary reported a deficit in connection with the ball, but hoped that the concert he had in hand would more than counterbalance the ball deficit. He hoped nominations would come in free for the sports to be held on concert day, as the trophies were all worth winning. One member put questions to secretary re Ball arrangements, and after these had been answered, a resolution was carried to the effect that the explanation of the secretary (who took full responsibility) was sufficient, whereas an amendment attempting to force certain information was negatived. And thus a lively half-hour ended, those present not deeming it advisable that their time should be further wasted over such a quibble. It was decided to play the Albion-Sandon match at Sandon next Wednesday, Rev. Father Molloy to be referee. After consideration of the motion asking for A. Imrie’s re-instate-ment to the Sub-Union, it was decided that the matter be held over, on motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Davis. THE DUFFY PROTEST. A protest was received from Albions, who objected to Awahou defeating them, the grounds being that a player named McLean who played for Awahou in the game in question, was not eligible to play. The registration paper produced of Duffy (McLean’s alleged nom de plume) was produced, and Mr Shadbolt declared this to be a fraud, as it possessed no date. Mr Imrie (Albions) said the player who had played under the name of Duffy but whom they believed to be McLean, came to Shadbolt’s Hotel the Wednesday before the match was played, but whether he bad been in the swamps or district before that day he did not know. He had heard that this man had played for Petone, so the witness wired to secretary Wellington Rugby Union and received the following reply ; 11 W. McLean played Petone now suspended end this season. ’ Since then, witness had written for
further information concerning McLean or Duffy, but time had not allovVed for a reply. A. Shadbolt thought there was something crook about the affair, thought McLean had been rungin. Witness intimated tuat the Awahou secretary was concerned, and thought he ought to be put up. Witness further said the man in question arrived at his pub. by the Levin coach on the Wednesday before the match, he having travelled by train that day from south and got aboard coach with Mr Watchorn at Levin. A considerable amount of discussion ended in the following proposition being carried, proposed by Mr Davis, and seconded by Mr Shadbolt: “ That the matter be held over till the Albions bring more evidence to substantiate their statements.” Votes of thanks to the chair and to Mr Gray for use of room concluded the meeting.
