THE ’FRISCO TRAGEDY,
The first animated pictures of the appalling visitations of earthquake and fire which devastated the beautiful city of San Francisco, one of the world’s most favourite tourists resorts, will be exhibited for the first time in Foxton on Saturday next by that popular and experienced proprietor, Mr Edmund Montgomery, who has a well-earned reputation for presenting everything in thoroughly up-to-date style. Of a recent performance an exchange says :—The pictures of most absorbing interest were the earthquake pictures, depicting the ashes and clinkers of San Francisco. It has been stated that the human eye has never rested on such a scene as San Francisco after the earthquake and fire, and to look upon the mountains of bricks and mortar, great tottering walls throwing out gaunt arms of distorted steel, grim skeletons of steel framed edifices swept bare in the unchecked conflagration—all this is very pathetic. There are no “fake” pictures. In the first of
the series the picture ot a long street is thrown on to the screen. At the far end the fire- is raging madly, and the sky is shut out bj a dense black pall illuminated irregularly by huge banners of flame. Down the street conies a procession of nondescript vehicles, piled up with household property, and people moving along hurriedly away from the triumphing flames, all burdened with portable goods, besides the burden of woe the disaster has heaped upon them. It is chaos in all its grandeur. *1 he whitened bones of the city are viewed from a travelling motorcar, which winds its way. through the streets, showing vast fields of debris, here formerly stood lines of stately mansions and manystoried buildings. One of the scenes depicts the dynamiting of a great wall —it justs sinks to the ground without ostentation in a cloud of dust. Another shows an injured man being attended sent away in a motor-car. Then there are the ruins of the Bulletin and Post newspaper offices, the new Majestic Theatre, and City Hall. A trip is taken through the “swell” quarter, recognisable only by the front steps and an occasional tree standing stark and blackened in a garden of crumbled bricks. Among new faces to appear will be Mr W. H. Montgomery, brother of the proprietor, ivho is a vocalist of exceptional talent.
