Great Sculling Event. TOWNS BEATS STANBURY. DETAILS OF THE RACE. STANBURY’S SHOULDER GIVES OUT. THE BETTING. Sydney, July 29. Favoured with perfect weather, the race On the Parramatta River between James Stanbury and George Towns for the championship of the world and ,£SOO aside, drew a great concourse of people. The course, from Ryde Bridge to the Searle Monument, a distance of three miles and 330 yards, was lined with spectators, and thousands crowded the steamers on the river. Stanbury stripped twelve stone six and Towns eleven stone. Towns won the toss and chose the southern side, but the position gave him little advantage, there being no wind and the water was smooth. From a good start Towns was best away and he established a lead which he maintained for the first quarter of a mile. Stanbury then waking up, gradually overhauled and-past him before reaching the mile, where Towns was half a length in the rear. Stanbury continued to widen the gap, leading by two lengths at Putney, and three at Tennyson. Approaching Carbarita Stanbury showed signs of laboring, and it was evident his right shoulder, about the weakness of which rumours had been current for the last few days, was giving him trouble. Inch by inch Towns overhauled him, getting level with the champion at Gladesville Wharf, where Stanbury’s shoulder gave out. From this out the race was a procession, Stanbury contenting himself with paddling. Stanbury suffered acutely from rheumatism for a week past. Morphia was injected into his arm prior to the start to ease the pain. His backers have put up a deposit for another race six months hence. Betting at the start was five to four against Towns.
