Foxton Borough Council.
MEETING TO CONSIDER EIGHTS. The Foxton Borough Council *met in strong force to consider the matter of lighting their new building. There were present—-His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower, Esq.), Crs Baker, Frankland, Moore, Shad bolt, Gray, Austin, Coley, and Hickson. Cr Stiles was out of town. The Mayor called upon Mr Fraser (Town Clerk) to explain the result of interviews with local millers re electric lights, and also information relating*to laying of pipes for gas or acetylene plant. Mr Fraser explained that he had waited on Messrs Ross and Jupp, who were of the opinion I that the whole scheme of lighting j the new buildings from their dynamos would be impracticable. The cost for a special dynamo for Council would be about and fittings at least As to acetylene, one estimate received was to the effect that a generator suitable to Supply all lights required could be purchased for £24, and the lights fitted for about £1 per point. The Town Clerk said Mr Ritnmer had a man in his employ Who had been used to laying these gas-pipes, and probably it would be the better plan, if they thought of going in for a gas-service of any description, to have this work carried out by Mr Rimmer while he was thus engaged in the initial erection of the building. . Cr 0. Austin was of the Opinion that pipes if wanted, could be laid just as cheaply and effective when the building was completed, as at present. He quoted his own house as an instance. Councillors generally seemed to drop the electric light altogether, while some exception was taken to the acetylene light. Cr Baker thought it may be possible to light the building with acetylene gas, conveyed by pipes from Cr Gray’s plant. Finally, the Mayor explained that at next general meeting of the Council he hoped to place a proposal before the Council, and on Jtiis recommendation, seconded by O'/ Baker, it was decided that the question of lighting the new building be held over till next general meeting of the Council.
