FOXTON—TO-DAY. (Before Dr Bennett and A. Fraser, Esqs., J.’s P.) A first offender for drunkeness was convicted and discharged. For drunkenness, Thos. Robb was fined ss, in default 24 hours; a prohibition order was also issued against accused. Thos. Robb was further charged with theft of papers from the library. Simeon Wilson, Librarian, gave evidence that papers had been removed from time‘to time from the Public Reading room without authority. In consequence of information received, he had visited the reading room last Thursday and found papers missing. He recognised the papers produced as belonging to the Library, as it contained the stamp he had imprinted, Mr Deßidder, clerk to Mr M. Walker, gave evidence as to seeing accused in possession of the Library papers in Walker’s store. Constable Whitehouse, called, % gave evidence as to charging ' Robb with the theft of these papers. Accused had answered that if he had taken them from the Library, he did not know he wa» doing it. Accused then made a like explanation, that if he had taken the papers he had done so while under the influence of liquor, and he did not remember doing so.
The bench touched on the seriousness of the offence, and after informing accused that he was liable to three months’ Imprisonment, Robb was convicted and sentenced to seven days* imprisonment.
