Mr Chamberlain. BIRTHDAY CONGRATULATIONS. GREAT GATHERING AT BINGLEY hall. SPEECH ON EMPIRE UNITY. London, July 10. The demonstrations in honour of Mr Chamberlain’s seventieth birthday were continued at Bit l mingham. They chiefly comprised recognition in Various ways of Mr Chamberlain’s strenuous Parliamentary activity and his devotion to national and Imperial ideas. Mr Chamberlain was the recipient of a great number of Coil gratulatiory messages, including one from Queen Alexandra, also telegrams from the colonies and hundreds from London, The various Stock Exchanges sent an address. The British Empire League, at its annual meeting, unanimously passed a resolution tendering the heartiest congratulations to Mr Chamberlain. All the newspapers contain congratulatory notices of the services of Mr Joseph Chamberlain-. Some generous tributes were received from Liberals) S,hd thousands of telegrams and letters, including many from Royalties. Mr Chamberlain spoke at Bingley Hall in the presence of an enthusiastic crowd of ten thousand people. He received over four hundred addresses of congratulation, The veteran's speech _ Was A vigorous one, reviewing his politicul life, and vindicating his attitude towards great problems which had arisen in connection with recent politics. He insisted that strengthening the bonds of of union of the Empire was the highest object of ‘ statesmanship. Mr Chamberlain said he was confident that the reforms he advocated would be achieved. Personally, he was satisfied at the way things were moving.
