AUCKLANDERS IN SYDNEY. NEWTOWN DEFEATED BY SIX POINTS. ELEVEN TO FIVE. Sydney, July 7. The Auckland City Football Club team met the Newtown Club here this afternoon and defeated the local men by 11 points to 5. The visitors who only arrived by the Victoria had a rough trip. Many of the team suffered severely from sea-sicxness, and one or two were unable to eat a single meal. Otherwise they are in good health thoufidi not in the best buckle enforced fasting _ and the knocking aborit they received. The weather was fine and bracing. About seventeen thousand persons witnessed the game. The Auckland Club was represented by W. Woods, G. W. Smith, F. Gladding, V. Little, E. Young, W. Tyler, A. Mcllhome, George Tyler, George- Nicholson, J. McGusre. F. Herring, C. Seeling, H. Plant, McGee, C. Little, Auckland won the toss, and played with a fresh westerly wind. Play was fairly even for the greater part of the first half, with occasional flashes by the visitors, which took the local players all their time to prevent resulting in scoring. The visitors were excellent in forward play, but deficient in the back division, if Smith be excepted. The latter got in some fine runs. A few minutes before half-time Newtown were being hard pressed in home territory, the Auckland forwards playing dashingly. Plant secured the ball from the pack and darted over the line, Young converting. Before the whistle went the visitors were running over the Newtown forwards. Seeling fell over the line, but Nicholson failed to add the extra points, and the spell ended—Auckland eight, N ewtown nil. In the second spell Newtown made play willing, and almost immediately scored off a brilliant ■» run by Russell, who beat the whole of the opposing side. Hay kicked a goal. The Aucklanders were then hotly pressed, G. Tyler , and Woods twice getting them out of difficulty. After a long period of uninteresting play, Smith gave a fine exhibition of speed, for which he was cheered. Luscombe only pushed him into touch as a try was imminent. Near the call of time a good piece of passing enabled Little to score a try. McGee's kick was a poor one, and the game ended —Auckland 11, Newtown 5.
