Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 1906. THE FINAL SCENE.
The late Richard John Seddon’s near and dear relatives must find a measure of solace in the fact that our late Premier was so highly revered, which was so plainly evidenced at the funeral in Wellington and memorial services held out of respect tor him in almost every centre in the Australasian colonies and in some parts of the> Home and Foreign lands. It would he Irani to find comparison with such evidences of respect paid to our late Liberal leader. Truly, the great Imperialist and Humanist was laid to his rest with the mournful sorrowings of a mighty nation., he was buried with the Empire’s lamentation. Thus the works of his life bespeaks volumes. The world is much the poorer by the death of the illustrious statesman, and we trust the sufferings of the near and dear relatives will be considerably alliviated and lessened with the realisation that the world grieves with them. The spectacle in Wellington was brilliant, though soubre, and will lie long remembered by those permitted to view same. The consecration of the burial ground was conducted by the Bishop, and we can well understand listeners becoming overcome with grief as the burial rites were read, viz:. “ We therefore commit his body to the grave; earth to earth, ashes to askes, dust to dust, in sure and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life.” And thus Richard John Seddon was laid to his earthly rest, with due honour.
