Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, JUNE 12, 1906. SUDDEN DEATH OF THE RIGHT HON. R.J. SEDDON, P.C., L.L.D.

Propound sorrow and regret was felt throughout the length and breadth of our fair colony yesterday when the sad news was flashed across from Sydney that , our Premier of 13 years reign had passed away suddenly to the great beyond. Death took place at sea —on board the Oswestry Grange, bound from Sydney to 'Auckland, the northern port of deceased’s beloved country. And so it was that perhaps the greatest leader of men, and at least the head of a Government who can claim to be the greatest framers of modern laws, and the most popular, respected and widely known politican of the present day, has been called away—from the midst ofhuudreds of thousands of colonists who will mourn the loss of an esteemed head, and who will look back with pride to the good works and benefits enacted and founded by the most wonderful statesman. and “ born leader of men” that ever lived—The late Richard John Seddon. This and other colonies will grieve the loss of our late Premier, and all must feel that the Ministry, so ably headed by Mr Seddon, will deeply miss his just leadership, his energy, his progressive instinct, his fatherhood, his iniative, and his intuitiveness. The secret of Mr Seddon’s immense popularity was that no matter whether a political opponent within the precincts of the house of legislature, once outside the walls of that House friendship was one of Richard Seddon’s greatest strong points and aims. And thus was he idolised by political friend and, foe alike! We could write much of the different beneficial acts framed by our late Premier, but, at present, we prefer to pay the greatest possible tribute to our deceased statesman —silence. Suffice it to say Mr Seddon will always be beloved for his striking and pleasing personality and his good and noble works ! Dike the whole of the populace of ‘ ‘ God’s own Country,” we mourn the loss of Mr Seddon, and extend our sympathy to his bereaved wife, family, and relatives in their troubles.
