THE AUSTIN BANNER
AWAHOU (9) v HUIA (8).
The first ten minutes of the above game Huia must have been asleep, for Awahou scored two of the most simple tries it was possible to obtain. Where was their right wing three quarter ? _ In fact, where were most of their backs when Charley Robinson obtained the ball from a good pass by Broad and bolted over the line, with no one to face on the journey. Certainly Tatana and Dunn chased him, but they had previously been playing the whole team, which could not last. The second try came soon after, through the timidity of Ashton Napier, who seemed to have the fear ot a thunder-stricken maniac in him when he noticed the dash of the Awahou vanguard. to relegate yourself to the fireside, than attempt to play football, if you have no heart. However, after about twenty minutes, during which Awahou had matters all their own way, Davey Tatana’s team managed to wake up and they asserted themselves somewhat. They pressed Awahou hard and Jimmy Bowe eventually got over, but the kick at goal failed. With the score 6-3 in Awahou,s favour, both teams started the second spell with a will. Eventually, Huia penned Awahou down, due to the splendid kicking of Davey Tatana. Then the ball came out.from the line, a.nd Jimmy Dunn gained possession and by a clever piece of work, scored a pretty try. He took a risk, though, and would do well to refrain from jumping at the expense of his life perhaps. Tommy Napier kicked a goal from this try, and Huia had a lead of two points, 8-6. Then Awahou rallied, and from a loose rush, the ball managed to evade the clutches of many of the butter-fingered Huia backs, and a black scored a try by good following up. No goal resulted, ■ and this gave Awahou a lead of one point, 9-8. No further score was recorded when the whistle blew. For winners all the backs played well at times, and though Rambert fumbled at times, he put in much good work. Broad Will be an acquisition to fhe backs, and is not selfish. Awahou will miss Charley Robinson when he goes north. Reid is a player who always manages to get his kick in. Geo. Robinson should make more use of his backs. There can be no doubt that the hookers get the ball, and it comes through the scrum well, but the play appears to end there. Jeffries played a solid game, especially in the tight. All the other forwards made spasmodic flashes of brilliancy, though much loafing was noticeable. Shadbolt, W, Coley, W. Robinson, Joe, Wright, Shea Shea and Williams are perhaps worthy of mention. For Huia, young Napier at halfback, should not try to snap the ball from the scrum so much and he would do well. Awahou had Tatana well watched. Still he executed much good work. Jimmy Dunn played a good game, but the full back and other backs better put on' a suit of armour. Until then their faint hearts cannot be expected to give them courage to play Rugby. Marshall does not know enough about the wing game at present, but grafted hard and well, and may be a great success at wing three-quarter if he can be kept in position. Bob Newth, Desmond, the big Tatana, Terry Royal, McKeown and Bowe were other prominent players. Mr Ern. Nash, of Palmerston North, refereed, whilst Messrs J. Furrie and J. McDonald held the touch flags. ( SANDON (30) v. HUIMAI (0). At Sandon on Saturday, the locals defeated Oroua Bridge 1 representatives by 30 points to nil. The score consisted of 10 unconverted tries. THE E. A. COREY CUP. ARBIONS (6) v. AWAHOU (0). Those who journeyed to the racecourse yesterday afternoon were rewarded by witnessing a good exhibition of junior football. Albions eventually won by six points to nil, and it can safely be said they bid fair to become a good side. They have the happy knack of throwing the ball about, a factor essential to good football. Ken Furrie scored a try, which was unconverted, while Charley Edwards placed a pretty goal. Mr Keriona refereed. NOTES. Huia and Sandon Juniors meet at half-past one to-morrow after-
noon on the racecourse in an K. A. Coley competition match. The Foxton Football Sub* Union meet at Haywood’s Hotel on Thursday evening next to duct much important business. Position in Championsips. Senior.
