ALIEN LABOUR. , London, May 22
Sir H. C. Bannerman, replying in the House of Commons to a question, assured Mr J. Ward, Labour member for Stoke-on-Trent, that the Government considered the House of Lords acted unconstitutionally in rejecting the bill to prevent the importation of aliens during a labour dispute merely because the Government did not take up the bill.
NAVY ESTIMATES
New York, May 21
Admiral Mason, Chief of the United States Ordnance Department, complains of Congress reducing the Navy Estimates by ,£2,450,000. Increases of the navy have, he stales, been voted without adequate provision for guns, gunnery, or stores. The condition of his department is almost desperate, the naval warehouses being depleted, of ammunition.
TRANSFER OF INSURANCE POLICIES DENIED. Sydney, May 22.
Mr Rennie, general manager of the Mutual Life Society of New York, denies the report that his company is considering whether the National Mutual Company shall take over its Australian business. Mr Rennie has received a cable message from the head office to the effect that the Mutual Life has not dreamed of and cannot make any agreement to reinsure or transfer any policy anywhere to any company.
DANGERS OF RABBIT BAIT. Twenty-five out of a herd of three hundred cattle at Yass have died from eating phosphorous laid for rabbits.'
