9' - ENTERTAINED AT SYDNEY EXHIBITION FARES. Sydney, May ig. To-day Mr Seddon was the guest of the Government on a trip round the harbour, including a visit to the training-ship Sobraon. To-night the visitor dined with the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Harry Rawsou. • Mr Seddon leaves for Melbourne on Monday, after which he will visit Adelaide, returning to Melbourne. Mr Seddon has arranged with Australian papers to publish an extended budget of New Zealand news. Being dissatisfied with replies received from the Union Company and the Huddart-Parker Company in reference to the employment oflarge steamers at reduced fares during the time of the International Exhibition at Christchurch, Mr Seddon has communicated with other'companies, such •
} as tlie P. and 0., the Orient, and the North, German Lloyds, on the subject. He has also com nunicated with Sir Joseph Ward and Mr ReSVeS concerning the matter. Hi case these companies are not prepared to undertake the work, Mr Seddou is making inquiries in regard to chartering vessels. He has had an offer from a wellknown London shipping firm) the agent Of Wliidi io at present in Sydney. The firm has signified that it is prepared to undertake the work on a small percentage on the annual charge. TRADE WITH The EAST. Sydney, May 20. Mr Seddou had an interview with the Japanese Consul relative to establishment of a direct service with the East-. The Consul was much pleased with the New Zealand, Singapore, Hongkong, Java, and Japan. The idea is favourably received in commercial circles. THE EXHIBITION. Sydney, May 20. There will be a meeting of the Australian Executive Commissioners in Melbourne on Wednesday to discuss Exhibition matters. New South Wales has taken up the Exhibition cordially, and good space has been-applied for by manufacturers. The Chamber of Commerce in Victoria regard tbe Exhibition favourably, the Government is lukewarm. Circulars were recently issued _ in regard to a Victorian exhibition, but the replies rather retarded matters in that State, but the new Premier is very favourably disposed. The South Australian Commissioners will meet Mr Seddon at Adelaide on Saturday next. Mr Seddon entertained at lunch on Saturday a number of New Zealand students who are attending various colleges here.
