A complimentary welcome soda! tendered to the Rev. J. Southern at the Meehodist Schoolroon on Thursday evening last was'largely attended, and proved a great success.
The position of chairman was entrusted to Mr Alex. Saunders, of Shannon, who, on behalf of the Methodist congregations of the district, heartily welcomed the Rev. J. Southern to Foxton. In reply, the Rev. J. Southern made many appropriate remarks relative to church work and in thanking the chairman for his kind expressions trusted they would all work harmoniously together.
During the evening, an excellent supper was provided, which was greatly enjoyed. A excellent musicial and vocal programme was rendered, viz Overture, Miss Fume; instrumental quarette, Messra Berthold, • Betty, Ebbet, Stiles, Hickson, and Master Berthold ; Dialogue, “The Good Temper Remedy,” Misses V. and M. Walker, Mrs Knewstubb, Messrs M. Walker and L. Bullard; brass quartette, Messrs Betty, Ebbet (2), and Berthold; song, Miss Bell (encored); another item was rendered by the instrumental quartette mentioned before, and Miss Furrie provided a pianoforte solo; violin duet Master L. Bullard and G. Simpson ; song, Miss Bell; brass duet, Messrs Ebbett and Bell, with Mr Berthold as accompanist; trio, Misses M. and V. Walker and I. Langley; song, Miss Cissy Robinson. Prior to the close, the ladies and performers were extended a hearty vote of thanks.
