Foxton Borough Council.
AN IMPORTANT MEETING
At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council last evening there were present—His Worship the Mayor (G. A. Simpson Esq.). Crs Baker, Stiles, Frankland, Moore, Shadbolt, Hickson, Gray and Austin. Or Gray apologised for the absence of Cr Coley. After the new Councillor (Cr Hickson) and the new Mayor had made the usual declaration, and the latter had been duly installed, the minntes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. REPORTS. The Inspector of Muisances reported giving several notices re drainage, and clearing up back yards. These done, he reported the Borough in ‘ a clean and sanitary state. The Borough Overseer reported at length on works carried out during month, and suggested the following -.—That Awahou culvert be filled in and all necessary work done to same ; that a crossing be put over Coley street drain op° posite Gladstone street, with old timber from AWdhou Bridge; Avenue Road and Union street are in a bad state > and require a considerable quantity of new metal, and I would like the Public Works Committee to inspect both roads, and also to appoint a convenient place to take sand from for filling in of Awahou culvert. The Borough Treasurer reported that since last meeting' £9 6a had been paid into Bank, and the amount of was now lying to credit of District Fund Account. The Treasurer also made lengthy reference to the state of Borough finance, and also submitted estimates for present year. We hold reference to this matter over till Thursday. On the paysheet appeared’ an item of 12s per yard for gravel (Mr Saunders), and with this exception, the reports, correspon. deuce and paysheet were adopted GENERAL BUSINESS. Much correspondence general business was dealt with in the following manner Proposed by Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Frankland, That the Council offer to pay Mr Saunders for the gravel at 6s a yard. Carried, Proposed bv Cr Baker seconded by Cr Gray, That a grant of £s per annum be made as requested by Mr L. Wilson (secretary school Committee) toward technical education in Foxton. Carried. Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Frankland, That the Council authorise the Library Committee to have 400 copies of a catalogue of the Library printed, the printing and details 4o be left in the hands of the Library Committee. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the local postmaster be asked if he could arrange for at least one daily delivery of letters all over the Borough. Carried.
Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Austin, that Mr Gray’s requisition re planting shrubs be left to Works Committee, and that the said committee meet on Wednesday, 16th, at 2 p.m. Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Gray, that Cr Baker be elected a member of the Works mittee. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Frankland, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the Post Office Department be asked to reduce the miniraun telephone charge to £2 los per annum, considering that subscribers’ list has been more that doubled since inauguration. Carried. Proposed by Cr Frankland, seconded by Cr Stiles, That in pursuance and exercise of the powers vested in it in that behalf by the Municipal Corporation Act 1900 The Public Libraries Act, 1869, The Foxton Borough Council hereby notifies its intention to strike a general rate of is gd in the £ and a Library rate of id in the £ on the annual value of the whole of the rataeble properties within the Borough of Foxton on nth June, 1906, for the period commencing on Ist April, 1906, and termating on the 31st March 1907 to be due and payable in one sum at the Coun- , cil Office on Ist day of July, 1906. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr Shadbolt, That the tarred foothpath in the Avenue where worn be repaired, when the weather proves suitable, and also footpate in front of Chung Wah’s. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Gray, That the Mayor (Mr G. A. Simpson) has power to sign cheques in place of the ex Mayor. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Shadbolt, seconded by Cr Frankland, That the Railway Department be urged up-
on to provide a lavatory car for the Palmerston-Foxton line, and the urgent necessity for same bo represented to the Departments Carried. Proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Austin, That the Railway authorities be urged upon to erect the long needed verandah and that a copy of this resolution be sent to Mr J. Stevens, M.H.R, Carried. Proposed by Cr Austin, seconded by Cr Coley, To borrow money from the bankers of the Foxton Borough Council by way of overdraft in anticipation of current revenue. Carried. EMU STREET. Correspondence was read from Mr Brewer re Emu street, and alter much delay, it was ultimately proposed by Cr Baker, seconded by Cr Stiles, That the Council will adhere to its original motion in reference to Emu street but will consider the probable taking over as a public street when completed providing no alterations be made in said conditions. Carded. THE SYMONS CASE. After legal opinion was read to Council (Mr Moore, solicitor for Mrs Symons, in the meantime retiring) the matter of appeal was dropped, and it was decided, on the motion of Cr Baker, seconded by Cf Stiles, That the award given by the judgment of Compensation Court in favour of Mrs Mary Symons be passed for. payment. Ocirricd* * The award was for /40, and it is estimated present Court costs, etc., will bring this amount up to about £65. The Council rose about 10.30.
