Presentation to Our Late Mayor.
Prior to the ordinary business of the Borough Council last eveniny, Cr Frankland (on behalf of brother Councillors), in an appropriate speech, presented the late Mayor with a suitably inscribed time-piece and set of silver spoons, to mark their esteem. Mr Gower had just entered upon a new department in life, and it was the wish of Council that Mr and Mrs Gowers’ wedded life would be all happiness. Mr Frankland therefore asked Mr Gower to accept the tokens, on behalf of Mrs Gower and himself. (L,oud applause). Mr Gower deeply felt the honour conferred on him that evening. Words could not express his feelings. On behalf of Mrs Gower and himself, he thanked Councillors for their tokens of goodwill, which would be prized by them both, and concluded they would excuse him from speaking further. “I don’t like to leave you, but I suppose I will have to go ! ” remarked Mr Gower. (I,oud applause).
