A stranger in Masterton on Wednesday last states that he met a welldressed man at a local hotel, who said he*W as a bookmaker, and was laying totalisator odds on the Wellington races The stranger made several bets with him. A slight shock of earthquake was felt in Foxton yesterday morning.
At the Meikle Commission at Dunedin yesterday, Dr Findlay Drought before the Court what he considered a case of contempt of the Court on the part of Meikle in insulting and threatening a witness named Fleming. The Commission ordered Meikle to show cause why he should not be adjudged guilty of contempt. A New Plymouth telegram says Petroleum shares are selling at £2O, and there is an unsatisfied demand from Auckland. The prospects continue excellent. The manager and directors left for Wellington yesterday morning in connection with enlarging the company. A foreign cable has been received asking the price of the whole concern. Foxton residents should roll up to night at the Public Hall and give the Levin Dramatic Company a good re ception. The combination are spoken of in excellent terras and certainly do serve support.
