AN AGGRIEVED PERSONAGE.

“ HAVING THE' PAPER TO CONTEND WITH.” At the meeting of Foxton householders last night, there was a lively quibble for a moment or two between Mr Baker (chairman of the late committee) and Mr G. Coley (also a member of that committee.) It may have been better had the occurrence never been recorded, but the fact remains that the affair was made public, and those present got the benefit. The trouble arose over a portion of the Chairman’s report, which regretted that some of the committee meetings had not been as orderly as

possible owing to the threatening language and abusive words made by one of its members. Mr Coley took exception to this portion of the report, and he was supported by many of those present, it being finally resolved that the objection-1 able portion of the report be < deleted. During Mr Coley’s remarks, he was indiscreet enough to assert that he had the paper to contend with—an allegation we emphatically deny. On no occasion has the Herald dealt unfairly with Mr Coley, neither does it intend to do so. But we have fought for rights, and if Mr Coley’s (or any other public man’s) actions demand criticism, we will not oe found wanting. It would be well for Mr Coley to bear that in mind, and to rid his cranium of the idea that he has the paper to contend with. We have no cause to bear him animosity or malice in public matters, but be careful lest we administer full dues. We feel sure the-ventilation of the 'natter referred to in the chairman’s report will do much go id, i.i th ;.t it will put a check on future misrule. By the way, we word I like to point out that the correspondence columns of the Hkkalo are open at all times to the public, and we would rather more pens than ours took up the cudgels in advocating progressive measures and rights.
