Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 1906. FOXTON SCHOOL MATTERS. A RECORD MEETING.

The Manawatu Herald smiles this morning, firmly believing that the articles relating to school matters imprinted in its columns during last week, had much to do with the record attendance which crammed into the new schoolhouse

last evening and manifested “ un-dreamt-of ” interest in the election of a school committee. It was certainly pleasing to think that Foxtonians could be roused to such a state of'enthusiasm, and we glory in recording the fact. When it is remembered that only last week not a single citizen would allow himself to be nominated for Mayor of our Borough, and only one personage could be influenced to stand for Council honours, householders generally can point with glee to the fact that the schoolhouse was packed to overflowing. Certainly, it may not have been the Herald articles. Quite possible it was the seismic disturbance at San Francisco which infused interest into' educa-

tional matters in our midst. There were supporters of every party, and some in abundance. However, those that came did not come in vain. There was excitement and heavy polling. Fourteen candidates were finally put up to fill nine seats, and, generally speaking, householders made a good selection, though in justice to the good work done by Mr Baker (as chairman of the last committee) we deplore the fact that householders did not see fit to re-elect him. Evidence of Mr Baker’s good work in educational matters was forthcoming when Rev. Wilson offered to forsake his .seat on the Committee in favour of Mr Baker. But that was not to be. The new committee elected capable personages to the positions of chairman and secretary, and we trust the actions of the new body will be none other than what will prove advantageous to the education of present and future generations.
