CAN IT BE TRUE?

Dame rumour is cruel at times, and if we could believe all that is going the round regarding the motives of an alleged combine in our midst working energetically to secure the return of a school com mittee who are expected (when returned) to make things so unpleasant for our present headmaster that he may be compelled to resign,—well, we would truthfully say “ permit us to shuffle off this mortal'coil.” But we don’t, for one moment believe the integrity of Foxtou householders will allow such a step to be taken, and, without fear from the “powers that would be,” we would urge those interested to roll up to the meeting called for the purpose and elect an independent and trustworthy committee to carry out school matters —a committee which can be relied on to follow in the cause of right, and not one which will be led on the great “lam” principle. We feel it our duty to speak in this strain, for rumour has been so strong oil the matter that we are compelled to advocate for the cause of good. We want no school committee which will be led by the mane at a given signal; we have sheer ignorance displayed enough on other public affairs in Foxton, and we want a sound thinking school committee; we want no corruption, no Tammany in Educational matters; but we want “ fair and British play.” Our only hope is that some of those names mentioned as being leading lights will have the good sense to cease to become a party to the affair. Influence of “ the powers that would like to be ” may do much, but we trust that the good sense of the townspeople will prevail, and meet the projected movement with such rebuke that the instigators will bury themselves from public life for all time. Remember that you are not followers of Dowie, and also that yon want no Tammany or no corruption, and that you will absolutely refuse to be led by any sect whose feelings are biased on all matters pertaining to “ rights.” Let us hope the rumour will die as suddenly as it burst forth—with the rapidity and sting of an eruption.
