The Cricket "Wind-Up"
A PHEASANT EVENING. About thirty cricketers and enthusiasts sat down at Mark Perreau’s rooms last night to an excellent spread. Toast, song and verse were the order of the evening, and an enjoyable time was spent. Mr W. S, Stewart (President of the Cricket Association) was in the chair, a position he filled with success.
Many of the speakers, in proposing and response to toasts, took advantage of the opportunity to make complimentary reference to Mr E. J. Furrie, who is about to leave Foxton, and who was mainly instrumental in forming the Cricket Association at the ber
ginning of the year. Mr Furrie suitably returned thanks at an opportune moment to the many kind references made concerning him as an athlete.
It fell to Mr W. S. Stewart to hand the medals won during the season to the different players. The winning team were: — Messrs C. Rand, W. Nye, E- Furrie, K. Furrie, A. Imrie, Frk. Whibley, N. Cunningham, Fred. Shadbolt, N. Shaw, and A. Overend,
Special reference was made to the donors of these medals, and the thanks of those present was loudly expressed to Mrs Reeve and Mr E. Dunn for their donation.
Mr Reade (umpire) and Mr W « S. Stewart (president) were also presented with medals presented by cricketers generally. The following toasts were honoured : —“ The King,” Chair* man; ‘‘Cricket Association/' proposed by Mr Stiles, response by Mr E. Furrie (secretary) ; ‘‘ Associated Clubs,” proposed by Mr W. Barnard, response by Messrs Reade (Foxton), Stiles (Debaters), and J. Bowe (Moutoa) ; ‘‘Foxton Football,” proposed by Mr Marshall, response by E. Sutherland; ‘‘Foxton Borough Council,” proposed by Mr Reade, response by Crs Stiles and Shadbolt; “ Donors of Medals,” proposed by Mr Stewart, response by Mr J. Dunn, on behalf of donors; 11 The Umpires,” proposed by Mr W. Nye, response by Mr Reade; “ The Eadies,” proposed by Mr T. Betty, response by Mr H. L. Hill; “The Caterer and Vocalists,” proposed by Mr Shadbolt, response by Messrs Mark Perreau and O. Edwards; “The Chairman,” proposed by Mr E. Sutherland, response by ,Mr Stewart ; “ The Press,” proposed by Mr W. Bowe, response by ManawaTU Herald.
Vocal items, which added considerably to the harmony of the the evening, were contributed by : —Reciations : Messrs J. E. Marshall, W. S. Stewart, and O, Edwards. Songs: Messrs T. Betty, L. E. Reade, O. Edwards, and E. G. Sutherland. Piano accompaniments were played by Messrs G. Stiles, E. E. Rsade, and Bert Shadbolt in capable style. The gathering broke up with the singing of “ Auld Eaing Syne” and ‘‘God Save The King.”
