Underground Horrors*

ENTOMBED MINERS EAT DEAD COMRADES. Paris, March 31. Thirteen miners have been rescued from the Courrieres pit, in the north of France, where an explosion took place on March 10th, causing 1100 deaths. The men are in a terribly emaciated condition, having endured frightful sufferings. During the time they were entombed they ate the dead bodies of their comrades. They also ate decomposed horseflesh and chewed the bark on the timber used in the workings. Some oats were also eaten. The leader of the band, a man named Nemy, has been able to describe the struggles the men had in the darkness after the explosion to find an exit. Finally they were guided by a column of fresh dir which was introduced into the workings by ex-! ploring parties seeking a new road to the seat of the fire in the mine. Since being rescued, the men , have been fed at intervals on teaspoonfuls of milk. i Their systems are affected, but it is hoped to save their lives. | Paris, April 1. : A live horse has been found in the second pit at Courrieres. In addition, the bodies.of several miners, who had only been dead a j day were found. j The Martin violently attacks; the engineers for negligence in not exploring the galleries. The ■ paper suggests thet they are : responsible for the death of all those who were not killed by fire damp. Two hundred and fifty miners and engineers are now exploring the mines but the work is exhausting owing to the noxious gas. [The disaster occurred on March 10th.]
