Literary and Debating Society.
The annual meeting of the lyiterary and Debating Society was held in Mr Moore’s office on Thursday evening, Bth. In the absence of the President, Mr E. Wanklyn was elected to the chair. The secretary and treasurer, Mr Iv. Jenks, read tile report and balance-sheet for the previous session, and the Society was shown to be in a satisfactory position both financially and otherwise.
The election of officers for the coming session then took place, resulting as followsPresieent, Mr W. S. Stewart; Vice-Presi-dent, Mr R. Moore; Sec. arnd Treas. Mr L. Jenks; Committee : —Messrs J. Murray, W. E. Barnard, W. Mainwaring, E. Spelman, and the Secretary.
Some discussion ensued as to the propriety of altering some of the rules, but with one or two shght amendments it was decided they should remain as they were. The edition of the “Journal,” the Society’s magazine, read a number of criticisms received by him in connection with the recent issue of the paper, and also announced the result of the Prize Essay Competion on ‘ ‘ Great Men” —Lincoln 8 votes, Burns 3, and Dickens 3. Mr J, E. Marshall, writer of the essay on Lincoln, was accordingly declared the winner. The general opinion expressed in the criticisms was that the last issue of the “ Journal ” was an excellent number, and in
